Building the market expansion case and investor narrative for a raise

The Situation

A US-based startup approaching their Series A needed two things: a credible market expansion strategy for the investors they were about to pitch, and an honest evaluation of their technology's position relative to where the science and the competition were heading.

The challenge was that the current product line was in a completely different market. Investors would want to see that the company understands not just its market, but why its specific technology creates a defensible advantage within it.

What We Found

We mapped the functional health market across three dimensions: where the science was leading (which ingredient categories had the strongest and most current clinical evidence), where consumer demand was accelerating, and where the competitive white space existed for a company of this size and stage.

The market expansion strategy identified three adjacent categories the company was not in but had the technology to enter. The expansion roadmap sequenced these against the company's manufacturing and regulatory readiness, not just the market opportunity.

What We Built

Nikita evaluated the company's proprietary technology against the current state of the science in their category — a structured assessment of what the technology could defensibly claim, where those claims were clinically supported, where they were extrapolated from adjacent evidence, and where they were not yet supportable at all.

The output was three technology position papers that the company could use internally to prioritize their R&D roadmap — and externally in investor conversations to demonstrate that they understood the difference between what the science currently supported and what they were working toward. That distinction, clearly articulated, is exactly what sophisticated investors in this space want to see.

The Outcome

The pitch collaterals we built were constructed around three things investors at this stage care about: a validated market model (not a TAM/SAM/SOM slide, but a specific account of who buys this, why, and what makes the company's approach to them defensible), a technology position that's honest about the current evidence base and credible about the development roadmap, and a strategic recommendation regarding the R&D direction.

The Series A raise was completed 6 months later.
